Tobago’s glass bottom boat

Tobago is the beautiful sister island of Trinidad. Unspoiled beaches, beautiful landscape, friendly people – great food from places called. “Miss Esmie’s”, “Miss Trimm’s”, “Miss Jean’s” – all delicious serving up the island specialties.  A definite Caribbean must do.

The island is small – you can drive around it in less than one day.  There is beautiful snorkeling and scuba diving. Where else can you spend a day at a goat race?  Or attend a weekly street party called Sunday School.

Traveling there in a large group of friends and family we organized an island tour. It was fantastic. We stopped at various spots across the island. We planned to stop at Speyside for an island lunch in a tree house and then take a glass bottom boat out to the reef to see the largest brain coral. Truly a specular sight to see.

In typical island time fashion we arrived for lunch late and were rushed through our meal. Nevertheless it was wonderful. We finished and proceeded to the boat, I love water, I love snorkeling and I love underwater life.

The water was a tad rough but I was fine. I did notice that I wasn’t seeing any fish through the large glass panel at the bottom of the boat. We all sat there anxiously waiting – but nothing.

Then it happened the meal – the waves – the rum punch I enjoyed. I turned to the side of the boat and fed the fishes. I was horrified – my lunch returned and at that moment the glass panel became a large window not only to my lunch but to all the underwater life.  I fed the fishes.

I realized at that moment that my sorrow became of the joy of the others on the glass bottom boat.

Caribbean islands, do you enjoy the 5 star resorts or the unspoiled tropical adventure?

I don't travel to escape I travel to self discover. To see different parts of the world to build my personal tool kit. I enjoy the path less travelled to truly learn about the traditions and nuances of my fellow citizens of this great world. Born and raised in Toronto of Trinidadian descent I never forget my roots and as much as I love leaving on that jet plane I always find satisfaction in coming home to my great city to share the tales of my great adventures with my friends and family.
