Did Hip Hop turn me into an international icon?

Now reading the title of this article one may think that it’s an actual rap celebrity writing….Wrong! I’m not a rap celebrity, in fact I’m just black. Well, being politically correct, I’m Jamaican. Unlike many of my counterparts, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in many countries (live, not visit) and experience all types of cultures.

It dawned on me last summer that I’ve become a world class celebrity, all thanks to hip hop. It was my first time in Eastern Europe’s Budapest Hungary and I was coursed into a relaxed day at the  Széchenyi Baths. Why not right? 40+ spas at different temperatures and half naked beautiful women walking around, it was almost the of a P.Diddy’s video.

As I got to the entrance of the Spa, I noticed that the cashier was trying her best to speak English with the largest smile on her face. She turned extremely red as I thanked her for taking my money!  As I got to my locker, I was then greeted by security who asked me if I had everything that I needed and would I like to get a “bigger” locker for the same price. If your asking, then why not? I only live once right? haha..

After getting first class treatment from the staff, I entered the grand courtyard where there were multiple outdoor spa’s. As I walked to the first spa, I couldn’t help but to notice the stares.. I mean, everyone was starring so hard, I felt as if I was on stage rocking a hip hop crowd. My entrance to the first spa was like crowd surfing, honestly the attention was over barring… Entering the spa I was greeted with smiles, high fives and even a random girl wanted to take a photo with me?….

Now, many of you would say that this is simply racist, or “uncultured” people (majority of the patrons were non Hungarians) in reality,  I felt that I was able to bring a culture to them that they only witnessed on TV.

Have you had the same experience while traveling black?
