It’s all good in Belfast!

During my time in London I was fortunate to have many exciting weekend getaways, unfortunately my cousin who was travelling on a student visa from Trinidad didn’t have as many options as I did (being Canadian). We really wanted a trip together and after reviewing our options we decided on Belfast.
Our expectations weren’t high (huge error in judgment) but we knew we’d have some fun and definitely some laughs.  We arrived late on a Friday evening and checked into our B&B – Camera House. It was charming and had a great history. A number of photojournalists had stays sphere during the “the troubles” hence the name. I love travel, history and photography so the idea of staying here was exciting to me to say the least.  This was the beginning on a great weekend adventure.  Belfast is such an amazing city, and this is my top 3 reasons why,

1. Friendly people – we had so much fun meeting locals, sharing stories and laughs. Visit the local pubs, speak to people. They will want to meet you, buy you drinks and just talk. A++ on hospitality.  Before you know it you will be pub hopping with 20 new friends down the streets of Belfast.

2. Giants Causeway – rent a car and go and see it. This is honestly one of the most incredible site I have ever seen. The scope and scale is breathtaking.  The power of nature.

3. The murals, Belfast is a divided city and the “the troubles” are expressed on huge buildings across the city. This was truly a “live” history lesson.  Take a tour in a cab, to see these murals and hear the stories of this divided city.

4. Great food! This was a huge surprise. Potato Boxty- is all I have to say!! Very delish (I know I said 3 but it was hard to pare down the list so I snuck in a #4).

I learned a lot on this weekend – about history, about people and most of all never to estimate a destination.  Belfast is a definite must-do for all “hot foot” travel enthusiasts!

Did you go?

I don't travel to escape I travel to self discover. To see different parts of the world to build my personal tool kit. I enjoy the path less travelled to truly learn about the traditions and nuances of my fellow citizens of this great world. Born and raised in Toronto of Trinidadian descent I never forget my roots and as much as I love leaving on that jet plane I always find satisfaction in coming home to my great city to share the tales of my great adventures with my friends and family.
