I didn’t conquer the Great Barrier Reef

Have you ever planned your trip dream – the one you have being dreaming about and saving for years. Ready to make some huge checks off that bucket list? I would be traveling to Australia. The land down under. I am an earth sign but always loved water. I would be spending a few days in Cairns. The Great Barrier Reef. The birth place of precious little Nemo. This was truly a dream for me.  It would be mind over matter for – I’d fight my propensity for motion sickness, board that boat and experience my dream.

I proudly board, get the necessary training and all of my gear. I’m ready to go. I put on that wet suit (scary – no modesty in this little number) but I didn’t care. I’d be seeing Nemo and all the glory of the reef.

It’s my turn and I’m ready to – I jump in … And wow the underwater sites are beautiful. Breathtaking.

This was my dream come true.

My Japanese guide who didn’t speak any English had to help me with the strong current, I was incredibly seasick and I ended up with a double ear infection (surfaced a few days later).

I fought my limitations and lost. It didn’t end the way I planned. However I wouldn’t trade this experience – this journey – for anything in the world. I didn’t conquer the Great Barrier Reef the way I planned but I did have my moment swimming with Nemo and his friends.

Did you ever get lemons on a holiday and make lemonade?

About the Author

I don't travel to escape I travel to self discover. To see different parts of the world to build my personal tool kit. I enjoy the path less travelled to truly learn about the traditions and nuances of my fellow citizens of this great world. Born and raised in Toronto of Trinidadian descent I never forget my roots and as much as I love leaving on that jet plane I always find satisfaction in coming home to my great city to share the tales of my great adventures with my friends and family.
