Confessions of a Cheap Hotel: Part 1. Amsterdam-age

Right off the bat, I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not a man of luxury, especially the prices that are attached to luxury. So I prefer to take my chances with a great hotel bargain.

In summer 2012 I ended up taking a flight to Amsterdam with a few friends for the weekend before the Olympics started. If you were anywhere near London during the Olympics  you would know that every business establishment within 1,000 miles of London had jacked their prices up.

Anyhow, prior to my flight to Amsterdam I went on a hotel booking site and found a BARGAIN! 19 Euros a night for a double hotel room in the center of Amsterdam. No, it was not a hostel, wasn’t a open shared space it was a full self-sustained hotel room. Mind you, this is what i saw in the photos. Regardless I proceeded to book the room for me and my buddies. 40 Euros for 2 nights for 3 guys was an amazing deal. We figured the size of the room wouldn’t matter, and being short 1 bed wouldn’t matter either. For this price, we’ll deal!…

Fast forward and we’ve already landed in the Dam. Beautiful summer day, lovely people, bikes all over the city and everything Dutch you can possibly imagine from the taxi ride to our hotel entrance…What an entrance it was…

I’ll write more next week. Trust me, you’ll want to read more..
